MURDEIRA VILLAGE, Sal, Cape Verde Islands

Murdeira Beach Resort Cape Verde Islands Flowers growing in Murdeira Cape Verde Swimming pool Murdeira

Murdeira, a gated complex, on the ocean on a West facing bay in Sal Cape Verde has one of the most beautiful spots on Sal, looking west over the bay to Monte Leao. Murdeira offers 24 hour security, reception, and has a range of properties from one bedroom apartments to 3 bedroom villas. 10 mins airport transfer.

Murdeira Village is well laid out and there is a feeling of air and space. Yet everything is relatively close by; and in phase one, you are never more than about 300 yards from the reception and swimming pool. To either side of the Murdeira, the island has not been developed and it's possible to walk for miles along the shore overlooking the bay with Cape Verde's mini rock of Gibraltar, Monte Leon. The properties in the resort are owned by a mix of locals and foreigners from a variety of countries, including Portugal, Italy, Austria, France, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, as well as a handful from Britain/Ireland. Many visit only rarely, so the resort is generally quiet. There are facilities for children.

Murdeira is about 10 minutes by motor from Espargos (Sal's capital) and 10 minutes by motor from Santa Maria. These are accessible by taxi, bus (these are minibuses and pick ups that run up to about midnight), or hire car.

There are 2 and 3 bedroom villas. Many of the properties have a seaview at Murdeira, and those in the front-line look out to the turqouise baia da Murdeira and the ocean beyond.

Murdeira was built some nine years ago with Cape Verdean architects and a lot of German equipment. There are plenty of parking spaces, either in designated car parks, or outside individual villas. Flowers and shrubs and palm trees are mature.

Taxis, doctors, nurses, services can be ordered from reception. Every property has access to cable television, though the choice of channels is limited.

Where is Murdeira?

It's 10 minutes by motor from the airport and the island's capital, Espargos, and 10 minutes from Santa Maria. You can get to any of these by car, taxi, or public bus.

Why choose Murdeira?

Locals choose Murdeira for the tranquility compared to Santa Maria and Espargos, and the security. Home owners and holiday makers choose Murdeira for the same reason. There is a large swimming pool, a tennis court, and a slipway for boats.

Where to eat and drink in Murdeira

The restaurant in the Murdeira resort is by the ocean, and next to the swimming pool. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are also many places to eat out in Espargos and Santa Maria. Several of these offer outside dining. There's a very basic grocery store in the resort, and supermarkets offering a wider selection in Santa Maria and Espargos.

The bar by the pool has seating outside overlooking the pool, and seating outside right at the water's edge overlooking Murdeira bay.

Sports at Murdeira

If you like swimming or snorkelling the seawater pool is a decent length for a really good swim (no charge for pool). The two childrens pools are of different depths. There are various beaches and coves which you can choose to swim from. Even right by the shore, there is a large range of fish, and occasionally turtles to view and snorkelling is generally excellent, depending on the state of the ocean.

Guest comments

We liked Murdeira a lot. for me there was no alternative. I'd rather have the swimming pool, tennis. the whole complex is fantastic. L from Cornwall.

I just love feeling so close to the ocean. To be at the water's edge and have a beach to myself is something that is hardly possible in Europe. To hear the sound of the waves at night is amazing. Murdeira offers everything I want, calm and remoteness and yet it's so close to Espargos and Santa Maria C from London

The facilities we used were the big pool (excellent), the snack bar (fine but very limited mid week), and reception who were efficient. The resort as a whole struck us, frankly as a bit odd. Really very isolated and artificial - but often beautiful in the sun. N from London

Cape Verde Jetaway's comments

If you like nightlife, loads of bars, beaches with people on them, and bussle, Murdeira is not for you. You may prefer to stay in a hotel or small apartment in Santa Maria. If you like running, cycling, snorkeling, swimming, reading, relaxing, sunbathing in privacy, having the possibility of living close to the ocean, having a beach to yourself, long walks along a rugged coastline, peace and quiet at night, very little traffic, few people, a swimming pool often to yourself, and space for outdoor living, then Murdeira should appeal. Some people combine both - they spend the day at Santa Maria and return to Murdeira in the evening; others prefer to spend the day in Murdeira sunbathing etc and then go to Santa Maria for dinner. From Murdeira, it's not far to Espargos as there are very few tourists there, especially in the evening. Either is only 10 mins by car.
